February Speaker - Casey Galvin

Casey Galvin took up photography in the 1980's. He became a member of the St. Louis Camera Club, where he is a Salon class photographer focusing heavily on nature subjects. He places particular emphasis on the Midwest and is very knowledgeable about natural history and ecology. Of his interest in science and human interaction with the environment Casey writes, “I like to think that I am someone who is trying to understand our world a little better and fit into it as well as I can.” Casey’s work has been published in Nikon World, Chicago Wilderness, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch and various books, magazines and calendars. Casey’s presentation will focus on shooting the natural communities in the Midwest. He feels that the Southeastern United States and the Midwest provide some of the most rewarding places to photograph because of the challenges they provide in finding subjects and landscapes. Most of the natural areas Casey will share with us are not in any nature photographic guides or in National Parks tour brochures, but he finds them interesting and unique.

March Speaker – Margy Terpstra

MoNEP member, avid birder and horticulturist Margy Terpstra will present “Our Garden is for the Birds!” at the March 16th meeting. Margy has lived in Kirkwood most of her life and together with her husband, Dan, has created a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat on their two-thirds acre property. Respecting nature and the needs of plants and animals comes first for the Terpstras, whether they are observing or photographing wildlife. Their involvement with MoNEP has been instrumental in the development of their ethical approach to nature photography. Margy will share her unique perspective on the crucial need for “stopover habitats” for migrating birds. She will show how they created their own wildlife habitat, including the “bubbler,” a water feature that has attracted 106 species of birds.

Annual Membership

If you have not already renewed your membership for 2010, it is time to pay your dues. Memberships are $25 per person or $35 for a two-person household.  Click the following link for the 2010 membership form. Payment and forms can be turned in to membership co-chairs, Vicki and Shawn Northrop at the January meeting or mailed to them at 1111 Wilmington Ave., St. Louis, MO 63111.

Share and Show

The Share and Show portion of each meeting is where members share up to FOUR of their images, along with short descriptions.  Now we have three ways to share the images: slides, prints, or digital files.  Digital files should be brought in on a labeled USB flash drive or CD-ROM and given to the Jerry Miller by 6:45.  Image names should include the name of the member and should be in a folder with the member's name.  Vertical images should be sized with a height of 768 pixels; horizontal images with a width of 768 pixels; and saves as .jpg files.  Here are directions for resizing images.  Remember themes are only suggestions.  Do not forget to pick up your flash drives and CD-ROMs before you leave the meeting.
